Hamburg's harbour is the third largest in Europe and one of the defining features of the city. The Elbe river flows past HafenCity, and from the apartment you are within minutes of the waterfront.
Things to do around the harbour
- Harbour cruise (Hafenrundfahrt): an essential Hamburg experience. Boats depart regularly from the Landungsbrücken, a 20-minute walk from the apartment, and take you through the working container port, past the Elbphilharmonie and around the HafenCity peninsula.
- Fischmarkt (Fish Market): held every Sunday from 5am to 9:30am at St Pauli, a short U-Bahn ride away. A Hamburg institution since 1703: fish, fruit, flowers and a rowdy atmosphere.
- Elbpromenade: the waterfront promenade stretches along the south bank of the Elbe, perfect for walking or cycling.
- Landungsbrücken: the historic pontoon pier complex, with ferries, boats and the Elbtunnel (the old pedestrian and vehicle tunnel under the river, opened 1911).
- Baumwall and Rödingsmarkt: two U-Bahn stops where you can access the waterfront easily.
