The Speicherstadt, Hamburg's historic warehouse district, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 alongside the Kontorhaus district. It is one of the largest warehouse complexes in the world, built between 1883 and 1927 on a series of narrow islands in the Elbe.
Today the red-brick warehouses house museums, design studios, creative agencies, showrooms and some of Hamburg's best coffee roasters. It is one of the most atmospheric parts of the city and is just 5 minutes' walk from the apartment.
Highlights
- Miniatur Wunderland: the world's largest model railway exhibition, covering 1,545 square metres with over 15 km of track. Book tickets well in advance, particularly in summer.
- Spicy's Gewürzmuseum: a spice museum in a former spice warehouse, with over 50,000 exhibits.
- Hamburg Dungeon: a theatrical horror attraction in the vaults beneath the warehouses.
- Kaffeerösterei Speicherstadt: several excellent speciality coffee roasters have set up in the warehouses.
- The canals and bridges: the Speicherstadt is threaded with canals; walking the bridges at dusk is one of Hamburg's great pleasures.
