Elbphilharmonie
One of the world's most spectacular concert halls, just 10 minutes on foot. Even without a ticket, the free Plaza viewing platform offers extraordinary views over the harbour and HafenCity.
The Elbphilharmonie (Elphi, as locals call it) opened in 2017 and immediately became one of the world's great concert halls. Designed by Herzog and de Meuron, it sits atop a former warehouse building on the tip of the HafenCity peninsula, its wave-shaped glass roof visible from across the city.
The concert hall has three performance spaces and is home to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. Tickets for concerts sell out months in advance: book early if you want to attend a performance.
Visiting without a concert ticket
- The Plaza (8th floor viewing platform) is free and open daily. The 360-degree views over the harbour, HafenCity and Hamburg are extraordinary.
- The tube escalator (the longest curved escalator in the world at the time of opening) takes you from street level to the Plaza.
- The building's exterior is spectacular at any time of day, but particularly beautiful at dusk.
