HafenCity harbour with the Elbphilharmonie in the background

Accommodation near the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg

All articles

The Elbphilharmonie opened in January 2017 after years of construction delays and a budget that had long since become a running story in the German press. When it finally opened, it was quickly clear that the result was serious. Designed by Herzog and de Meuron atop a former warehouse building on the tip of the HafenCity peninsula, the concert hall changed Hamburg's skyline in a way that few buildings change a city.

The main performance space, the Grand Hall, seats around 2,100 people and has an extraordinary acoustic design: the interior is lined with thousands of individually shaped gypsum panels that diffuse sound across the auditorium. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra is the resident ensemble, with visiting orchestras and soloists throughout the season. Concert tickets sell out well in advance, often months ahead for popular programmes.

The Elbphilharmonie is worth visiting even without a ticket. The Plaza, on the 8th floor, is a free public viewing platform open daily, with 360-degree views over the harbour, the Speicherstadt, HafenCity and Hamburg's older districts to the north and west. Access is via a curved escalator that runs the full length of the original warehouse building. Timed entry tickets for the Plaza are free but should be reserved online before you visit, particularly in summer.

From the Hamburg Holiday apartment, the Elbphilharmonie is a 10-minute walk. This changes how the building fits into a stay. You can walk over for a Plaza visit in the afternoon, return to the apartment, then walk back for the evening concert. Late finishes are not a logistics problem. The building becomes part of the neighbourhood rather than a destination that requires planning. The apartment covers 65 m² across two bedrooms, sleeping up to 4 guests, with a floor-to-ceiling glass facade and loggia. More details and photos are on the apartment page.

What else is nearby? The Speicherstadt, Hamburg's UNESCO World Heritage red-brick warehouse district with Miniatur Wunderland and some of the city's best speciality coffee, is 5 minutes on foot. Hamburg's historic centre is 15 minutes. The area guide covers the wider neighbourhood in more detail.
